How to set a minimum order value on Shopify

Choose a meaningful threshold, write a useful cart message, and test your minimum order rule before publishing.

Start with the order policy

Decide why you need a minimum order value. For example, a wholesale store may want orders to reach a practical fulfillment threshold. Use your own costs and customer expectations to choose the amount; a higher threshold is not automatically better.

Create a minimum cart-subtotal rule

In KartVantage, start a draft from a cart-value template or configure a minimum cart subtotal. Give the rule a descriptive name and enter the amount that reflects your policy.

Use the subtotal specified by the rule, rather than assuming the rule checks the final total including shipping or tax. Confirm the actual result in your store before publishing.

Write a message with a next step

A useful message explains the requirement and what is missing. For a $100 minimum and a $72 cart, an example is: “Add $28 more to meet the $100 order minimum.” Avoid messages that say only “Invalid order.”

Test three boundary cases

  • Below the minimum: the cart should trigger the configured rule.
  • Exactly at the minimum: confirm the cart passes that rule.
  • Above the minimum: confirm the cart still passes unless another rule applies.

Repeat with the currencies and discounts you use. If the rule has customer-tag exclusions, test both included and excluded customers.

Publish, add guidance, and check checkout

Publish the rule, review synchronization, and add a Cart Progress block on a supported theme surface. Preview a real cart and continue to checkout. Cart guidance helps explain the policy; checkout validation is the enforcement step.

A better cart starts with clear rules.
